Syria rebels capture Damascus, claim Assad has fled the capital

Syrian rebels have declared the capital Damascus “liberated” after entering the city to scant resistance from regime forces, while claiming President Bashar al-Assad has fled the capital, losing his decades-long grip on power, reported Cable News Network (CNN).

An active search is underway for Assad, according to a source familiar with the rebels’ operations, said the report, adding that the Syrian leader has not been seen or heard from publicly since rebels entered the capital early on Sunday morning.

The removal of Assad would bring an end to more than 50 years of his rule of the nation of about 23 million, which has been buffeted and fractured by more than a decade of civil war.
