Lightning strikes kill 21 in India's Jharkhand, Bihar

At least 21 people were killed and many others suffered injuries in lightning strikes in India's eastern Jharkhand and Bihar states during the past 48 hours, officials said Tuesday, reported Xinhua.

According to officials, the majority of the victims were working in their fields when the lightning struck them. While 12 deaths were reported in Jharkhand, nine have been reported from the neighbouring Bihar.

"During the last 48 hours, at least 12 people lost their lives and seven others sustained critical injuries due to lightning strikes across various districts of Jharkhand," a government official said.

A local media report said Giridih and Dumka districts were hit hardest in the state, followed by West Singhbhum district.

"In Bihar, at least nine people were killed and several injured due to lightning," the state-run broadcaster All India Radio said.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms and remain alert, especially in open areas, as they remain vulnerable to sudden lightning activity during the monsoon season.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rainfall and lightning in both states until July 17.

Every year, with the onset of monsoon season, hundreds die in lightning incidents in India.
