Government forces killed 31 Naxals during an operation in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, federal home minister Amit Shah said Wednesday, reported Xinhua.
The anti-Naxal operation was carried out by the joint contingents of police and paramilitary in the Karegutta hills of Bijapur district, about 450 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.
Shah described the killing as a "historic breakthrough" in India's fight against Naxals, saying Karegutta hill was the unified headquarters of big Naxal organizations, where along with Naxal training, strategies and weapons were also developed.
Meanwhile, Director General of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force Gyanendra Pratap Singh told media they have made huge recovery of arms and ammunition during the operation spread over an area of 1,200 square km.
India's federal government has resolved to eradicate Naxalism before March 31, 2026.
India's former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh once termed the Naxalite movement as India's "greatest internal security challenge."
