Hundreds of Israeli Air Force reservists, veterans urge end to Gaza war

Hundreds of Israeli Air Force reservists and retired aircrew members issued a public letter on Thursday, urging the government to halt the fighting in the Gaza Strip and bring home all Israeli hostages, reported Xinhua.

Following the letter's publication, Israel's state-owned Kan TV News reported that Israeli Air Force Commander Tomer Bar, backed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief Eyal Zamir, decided that any active reserve soldier who signed the letter could no longer serve in the army.

The letter, published as an advertisement in several Israeli media outlets, stated, "At this point, the fighting primarily serves political and personal interests, rather than security needs."

"Prolonging the war does not advance its declared objectives. Instead, it risks the lives of hostages, Israeli soldiers, and innocent civilians, while exhausting reserve forces," it added.

The signatories further argued, "Only a negotiated agreement can bring the hostages home safely. Military pressure, on the other hand, mainly results in their deaths and increases the danger to our soldiers."

They called on all Israeli citizens to mobilize for action and to demand everywhere and in any way that the fighting cease and the hostages be returned now.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed the dismissal decision.

"Statements that weaken the IDF and strengthen our enemies in a time of war are unforgivable. This is an extremist fringe group that is once again trying to break Israeli society from within," he said in a statement.
