Gunmen killed a police commissioner on Thursday in Cameroon's English-speaking region of Northwest, which has been ravaged by a separatist conflict, according to police and local sources, reported Xinhua.
Yves Angos Assilla, commissioner of Special Branch Police in Bamenda city, was ambushed and shot dead by gunmen in Ntamulung neighborhood, said a police official in the region.
"He was well-loved by the population and devoted to his duty. We are pursuing the terrorists who committed this abominable act," the official who asked not to be named told Xinhua by phone.
No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but police said the attack was carried out by separatist fighters known to be operating in the city.
There has been fighting between government forces and separatist fighters in Cameroon's two English-speaking regions of Northwest and Southwest since 2017 after separatists attempted to create an independent nation in the regions.
