7 killed in bomb blast, 17 killed in military operation in Pakistan

At least seven people were killed and 17 others injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday, reported Xinhua, quoting police.

The explosion occurred at the office of a local peace committee leader in the Wana Bazaar area of South Waziristan district, local police told Xinhua.

The explosive device was planted and remotely detonated, the police said, adding that the blast caused the office to collapse, trapping several individuals, including a local leader, under the debris.

The injured were immediately shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Wana for medical treatment, the spokesperson said.

Rescue operations were underway at the scene, while security forces had cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident, police added.

Meanwhile, 17 alleged terrorists were killed in an operation in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military said in a statement on Monday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military's media wing, the operation was conducted on Sunday night in the Hassan Khel area of North Waziristan district.

It followed a series of successful counter-insurgency actions by security forces between April 25 and 27, during which 54 terrorists who attempted to infiltrate Pakistan from Afghanistan were killed.

During the operation, 17 more terrorists were killed, the ISPR said, adding that a large quantity of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was recovered from the scene.

The number of terrorists killed in the three-day anti-infiltration operation has risen to 71, it added.

Security forces of Pakistan remain determined and committed to securing the country's borders and eradicating the menace of terrorism, the statement added.
