The United States on Wednesday announced sanctions against a senior United Nations official over her role in investigating alleged human rights violations involving Palestinians, reported Xinhua.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the sanctions target UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, accusing her of making what he called "illegitimate and shameful efforts" to encourage action by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies and executives.
The move marks Washington's latest efforts to deter international investigations into alleged war crimes committed by Israel amid its ongoing military operations in Gaza.
The sanctions follow an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump in February, which authorized punitive measures against the ICC for what the administration described as "illegitimate and baseless actions" targeting the United States and Israel.
