German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock met the daughter of German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd, who was sentenced to death in Iran, in the United States on Friday, reported dpa.
"Deeply grateful to the German foreign minister for spending time with us on her trip in Washington DC to speak about my dad Jimmy Sharmahd," daughter Gazelle Sharmahd said on social network X, formerly known as Twitter.
Baerbock would not comment on the content of the conversation.
Gazelle Sharmahd's father is one of several Germans imprisoned in Iran.
He was sentenced to death on terrorism charges. His relatives vehemently deny the accusations against him.
Baerbock has called on those responsible in Tehran to reverse the "absolutely unacceptable" sentence.
This week, Baerbock spoke on the phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian for the first time in a year and a half. The German Foreign Office said that the exchange on Wednesday had dealt with a number of issues where "different attitudes" had been discussed.
A particular focus of the conversation was on "German consular cases" – cases such as Sharmahd's – in which German citizens abroad require the support of the German government.
Relations between Germany and Iran are tense. After the nationwide protests following the death of a woman in police custody in autumn 2022, Baerbock openly criticized a crackdown by Iranian security forces.
Statements from Tehran against Germany also intensified. Iranian politicians have repeatedly accused Germany of interfering in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic.
