At least 62 civilians were killed in a shelling by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, in western Sudan, the Sudanese army announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua.
"In a desperate attempt, the militias launched indiscriminate shelling across the city at various intervals yesterday (Wednesday)," the command of the 6th Infantry Division of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) said in a statement.
"The shelling left 62 civilians dead, including 15 children, 17 women, and 30 men, and 75 others injured with varying degrees of severity," it added.
For its part, the Coordination of Resistance Committees in El Fasher, a volunteer group, stated that "the toll from the RSF militia's artillery and drone shelling yesterday reached 57, most of whom were women and children, with a large number of serious injuries."
"The shelling targeted the livestock market in southern El Fasher and several neighborhoods in the city," it added in a statement.
The group also reported a renewed wave of RSF artillery shelling on El Fasher on Thursday, leading to additional casualties and injuries, though the exact figures remain unconfirmed.
The RSF has not yet issued any comment regarding the attack on El Fasher.
Since May 10, 2024, fierce fighting has erupted between the SAF and the RSF in El Fasher, part of the broader conflict that has engulfed Sudan since April 2023.
